The line up of speakers and presentations at Designers Saturday provides an excellent opportunity to take in two days worth of professional development. Showrooms taking part in the event will be hosting a number of RIBA accredited CPD presentations with topics ranging from the impact of global warming on the work place to heath and safety. Along with the seminars at each showroom visitors will be able to talk to experts on innovation, trends and issues facing the working environment and architects will be able to build continuous professional development (CPD) points and hours thanks to RIBA’s accreditation of the two-day event. Friday September 26th:
All day at Kinnarps: Welcoming Workplace by Matthew Harrison
Kinnarps will have a rolling presentation that reveals the results of a two year investigation into the needs of ageing knowledge workers in office design.
Called Welcoming Workplace*, the research which was carried out by the Helen Hamlyn Centre at the Royal College of Art included in-depth interviews with workers in London, Yokohama and Melbourne.
Hear about the diverse demands on office furniture and environments as the pace and energy of working life speed up and the workforce gets older. There is an argument for more domestic environments within the workplace where workers can have quiet contemplation and recuperation away from the buzz of an open plan office.
RCA researcher, Matthew Harrison, will be available all day to discuss the findings at the Kinnarps showroom.
10.30am at KI: File Frequency - the New Age?
Visitors to the KI speaker session File Frequency- the New Age?* will see the very latest technology used in storage and retrieval. The 20 minute presentation will focus on RFID and its role and benefits in the new office environment. Attendees can expect to gain new perspectives into electronic file tracking and understand key RFID technology. Architects will also learn how to build a business case for electronic file tracking and be able to incorporate file management into the design of client buildings.
11am at Ahrend: Introduction to Workstation Ergonomics by James Hutchinson
Ahrend’s Clerkenwell Road showroom will host James Hutchinson of Colebrook Bosson Saunders who will provide an Introduction to Workstation Ergonomics*. As part of the presentation, James will identify the potential health problems associated with the use of technology in the office workplace. His talk will also cover legislative requirements and applicable regulations and standards. Visitors will also see a step-by-step analysis of the correct setting of the elements of an office workstation such as desk, chair, keyboard and monitor.
12.30pm at Herman Miller: The Future of Work by Mark Catchlove
Global warming is the hot topic at Herman Miller’s showroom. Director, Mark Catchlove will take visitors through The Future of Work* , a seminar based on research carried out by The Workplace Intelligence Unit.
Promising to be both challenging and thought provoking, the seminar will look at three possible future global warming scenarios and assess the impact on the working environment in each. Workplace professionals are invited to exchange views and best practice ideas.
1pm at Steelcase: Generations@Work by Zoe Humphries
Zoe Humphries, a senior workspace consultant with Steelcase’s Workplace Consultancy team will look at the affects of having four generations in the work environment at the same time. Called Generations@Work*, the seminar will examine the needs, influences, aspirations and inspirations of the four generations from Gen Y to the traditionalists who were born before 1945. The big question will be: How do you design a workspace to satisfy everyone?
1pm at Knoll: No Compromise Ever by Stephen Bayley
One of the world's best known commentators on modern culture, Stephen Bayley will be at Knoll’s Smithfield showroom to discuss 70 years of Knoll design. Called No Compromise Ever, Bayley’s talk will also look at Knoll’s position within post war American modernism.
Bayley, who was the joint founder of the V&A’s Boiler House project of exhibitions in the 1980s and responsible for setting up the Design Museum, lectures around the world, and is the author of eight books

2pm at Humanscale: Compliance for the Office Environments and Furniture by Levent Çaglar
Humanscale’s showroom will host senior consultant ergonomist, Levent Çaglar who will discuss Compliance for the Office Environments and Furniture. Çaglar is an expert on European Directives and UK legislation concerning health and safety ergonomics. He currently runs the Ergonomics Unit of the FIRA, the world’s leading independent furniture technology centre. He is also a regular provider of ergonomics advice on the design, development and assessment of furniture from concept to final product stage. As well as giving a scheduled talk Levent will be at the Humanscale showroom from 12pm to 5pm to advise on any questions regarding ergonomics, product specification, and current FIRA regulations.
3.30pm at Bisley: Unlimited Polymer Solutions
Bisley’s Great Portland Street showroom will host a talk by Rehau - Unlimited Polymer Solutions*. The presentation will aim to leave visitors with a better understanding of polymer materials used in office furniture. The talk will cover the history of polymers, their applications, environmental considerations and the processing of polymers.
4pm at Haworth: The blurring boundaries between fine art and design disciplines through cultural branding and masterplanning by Mark Davy
Mark Davy of FutureCity Ltd will take centre stage at Haworth’s showroom to talk about the blurring of boundaries between fine art and design disciplines through cultural branding and masterplanning*.
The talk will look at the growing interest by the private sector in new collaborative approaches to design including art and architecture, street furniture, water, lighting, landscape architecture and graphics and advertising. Questions posed will include: Does mixing different art and design disciplines diffuse and devalue pure design, confusing client and the public?
4pm at Sedus: Noise Control for your Office by Mark Stevens
Noise Control for your Office* is the learning topic at the Sedus showroom. Mark Stevens of Screen Solutions will talk about the importance of acoustic comfort in business. His seminar will also cover the affect that room acoustics has on staff efficiency and how architects and designers can think and plan ahead for noise control.

Stephen Bayley is one of the world’s best known authorities on design, architecture and popular culture. Author, critic, columnist, curator, broadcaster and consultant, he was the founding director of London’s Design Museum.
