Bisley Announces Winner of MiniBisley competition

image Bisley is delighted to announce the winner of its MiniBisley competition launched at Designers Saturday earlier this year. Winner of the first prize of £250 Selfridges vouchers is freelance designer Richard Shed.

All visitors to Bisley’s Great Portland Street showroom on Designers Saturday were offered the chance to fabricate their own 200mm tall “MiniBisley” cabinet, demonstrating the art of precision engineering. Visitors were invited to submit photographs of how they subsequently used their cabinet, with a prize for the most inventive solution.

Richard Shed transformed his MiniBisley into an eco-friendly light fitting. Stephen Bayley who judged the competition commented that it “...serves a dual purpose : very appropriate in these harsh times.”

Richard Shed describes the inspiration behind his winning idea,

“I wanted to completely change the function of the cabinet with a bit of re appropriation. I liked the idea of bouncing the light around the inside and then the simple lo tech action of opening and closing the doors to control the intensity of the light. I love the way the light looks like it is oozing through every gap and perforation in the cabinet! ”

The runner up prize goes to Emma Flanagan of Grimshaw Architects for her charming bird feeder, commended for its excellent presentation.

Commenting on the overall emphasis of the competition. which was to find alternative use for generic items, Stephen Bayley said:

"Architecture and design are changing moods.  After years of pornographic and vainglorious showboating, there are new senses of discipline, tact, manners, restraint. Creative re-use has now replaced restless neophilia. Waste was never smart; now it looks positively stupid".
